Protect your Knees by Getting Low!
Who wouldn’t want to prevent a major knee injury? What if there was a way to practice sound mechanics when cutting and pivoting on the court/field? Ugh, there is!
Whether you are working on some agility by yourself or coaching youth sports, follow this tip whenever you are turning: GET LOW! By dropping your hips back and bending your knees, you’ll engage more protective muscles and put yourself in a more athletic position to complete the movement. Oftentimes, as we rehab athletes back from major knee surgery, we find ourselves teaching this at some point. It is not necessarily intuitive to drop down a bit in altitude when cutting, but it is certainly a safer way to go about it.
So, when you are backpedaling and are about to turn, sit down a little, open your hips up, and rotate on bent knees!
